The Outer Worlds 2 looks like it’s going to be another fun first-person RPG from acclaimed developer Obsidian Studios. After their work on Avowed, it’s exciting to see what else they have in mind with their version of Fallout. We think that there’s a lot to like with this game, even if it’s not the most exciting IP.
Unfortunately, despite having an anti-capitalist message, this game is going to be $80. It’s not a great look from Xbox, especially since they chose this property to debut their new price tag.
Because The Outer Worlds 2 and its predecessor were very much against corporations, pricing $80 for a game like that seems counterintuitive. Granted, games like the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy also have that message and are priced similarly, but they’re slightly more subtle about it.
We just think that a slightly newer property shouldn’t be the game that starts a company’s new price structure. Of course, no actual game is worth $80, no matter how much content there is, but this just seems to be the current direction for this industry. Even then, we still think this is a bad choice because this property hasn’t built enough goodwill with fans to “earn” that price.
“Earn,” because, once again, no game is actually worth $80.
Still, if Xbox had to choose a game to debut their $80 price structure, they could have chosen a different property. Choosing something like Halo would have made more sense, since that game series has an incredibly loyal fanbase. Even if Infinite hasn’t set the world on fire, there are still plenty of fans who defend this game.
A new Gears of War game would also make fans fork up $80, especially since E-Day was already revealed. There’s always a good chance that game is going to be $80 at release, but fans would have understood that more than The Outer Worlds 2. Even a collection of the older games remastered is arguably worth $80, although the first game seems to be enough for some.
Fable’s another solid contender for being Xbox’s first $80 game, just because fans love that RPG series so much. Xbox was never really a platform for RPG games, but this RPG helped build that bridge and bring other entries into this line of consoles. We actually wouldn’t be too shocked if the upcoming Fable game is priced at $80.
Just for one more stark reminder, we don’t think any game is worth $80, let alone The Outer Worlds 2. We can at least see why Nintendo would price Mario Kart World that way, since it’s their best-selling series. Obsidian is a great company, and the first Outer Worlds was fun, but this IP is still unproven to most gamers.
