Just when it seemed like the future of physical Switch 2 games was in question, SEGA has announced that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is getting a full game card. The only caveat is that it’s coming out next year after a digital release, but fans are more than willing to wait. We hope this is a sign that more full game cards are coming for Switch 2.

SEGA released an FAQ about CrossWorlds, specifically for the current-gen Nintendo version. It’s here that SEGA confirmed a full game card that will be coming out in early 2026. Fans who want the digital version will be able to pick it up on Holiday 2025, giving Mario Kart World some racing competition this Christmas.

Unlike Dragon Quest I & II 2D-HD Remake, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will also have an upgrade path for original Switch owners. Whether it’s the physical Switch 1 cart or a digital purchase, fans will be able to buy an upgrade pack to experience all of the Switch 2 version’s bells and whistles. A free upgrade would have been better, but this is a solid enough option.

The CrossWorlds news is exciting, since it shows that SEGA is willing to learn from its previous mistakes. Sonic X Shadow Generations didn’t offer any Switch 2 upgrade path for Switch 1 owners, which was criticized by many. It didn’t help that the game was also a Game-Key Card, which is just a digital release on a cartridge, even if they aren’t locked to specific consoles.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds looks like a return to form for the series after Team Sonic Racing was a step back from the SEGA mascot’s previous racers. Team Sonic refrained from major SEGA crossovers and played it safe, despite some unique team-based racing mechanics. Crossworlds is adding characters from Persona, Yakuza, and Nickelodeon, albeit as DLC, as well as offering more interesting courses to race through.
