Nintendo has officially announced that the Switch 2 sold over 3.5 million units in its first four days since releasing this past June 5. That makes the hybrid handheld not only the fastest-selling Nintendo hardware globally ever, but also the fastest-selling home console during its first few days on the market.

How Do Switch 2 Sales Compare?

To put those numbers into perspective, the original Nintendo Switch, which launched in March 2017 to great success, managed to sell over 1.5 million units during its initial week. Sony's PlayStation 5 shipped 3.4 million units in its first month. So yes, the Switch 2 is a historic runaway success that not even the most optimistic of fans could have predicted.

Price controversies and being considered by many more of a Switch 1.5 upgrade didn't matter in the end. The appeal of things such as an open-world Mario Kart game (Mario Kart World) and beefier specs that essentially bring new life into older Switch titles was too enticing for the general consumer to ignore.

What has helped Nintendo reach this massive milestone is availability. While some places have the Switch 2 out of stock, it's hardly difficult to get ahold of depending on where you live. In a recent interview with CBS Mornings, Nintendo of America boss Doug Bowser confidently confirmed that the company expects the Switch 2 to be widely available throughout the rest of the year, including the holidays.

Even if you think the initial launch library lacks more major titles, the likes of Donkey Kong: Bananza, the enhanced Metroid Prime 4 which will run at 120fps and support mouse controls, and a heft retro-compatible catalog could make users cruise by until the next Mario, Zelda, mainline Pokemon, Fire Emblem, or Animal Crossing come around.
