Arc System Works has reportedly cancelled an upcoming Guilty Gear sequel. There was no reasoning behind its cancellation, which was decided in the last couple of weeks.
According to Insider Gaming, the potential follow-up to Guilty Gear Strive had been in development for an unspecified amount of time. It could very well mean the project was just getting started, with Arc Sys possibly deciding to shift its entire focus to the upcoming Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, a 4v4 Marvel tag fighter that Sony will publish.
Now, this doesn't mean the series is going through a rough period. Well, maybe if you ask fans what they think of recent balance patches and the waiting time in between DLCs, you'll get a different answer. But in the grand scheme of things, Strive is nothing but a resounding success for Arc System Works.
Having been released in 2021, Strive has continued to receive support over the past four years. Fans are eagerly awaiting one of the most exciting characters yet, as Lucy from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set to join the roster in the coming weeks. There's even rumblings of a season 5 to extend the support to at least 2026.
Sales-wise, Strive sits strong as the best-selling Guilty Gear to date, surpassing 3 million copies as of January 2025. The recent Switch port has definitely made the game more accessible.
It makes total sense that Arc Sys decided to pour even more resources into Marvel Tokon. For one, the project is being funded by Sony, as the game will release as a PlayStation console exclusive (as well as PC).
Furthermore, the last tag fighter the studio worked on, Dragon Ball FighterZ, was a massive success for them. It ended up selling well above 10 million copies, helping catapult Arc System Works from a niche fighting game developer to one of the most sought-after in the industry.
