Xbox dropped a shocking announcement during their June 2025 Showcase. Game Freak, a studio synonymous with the Pokemon franchise for decades is developing a brand-new IP: Beast of Reincarnation. It's set to come out in 2026 for Xbox Series (Game Pass included), PlayStation 5, and PC (via Steam).

The studio is co-owner of the Pokemon franchise, so they rarely get to flex their creative muscles outside of it considering it's one of the biggest IPs in the world.

Beat of Reincarnation looks like a much more produced project than the studio's ever done before. It follows main character Emma and her dog companion as they try to survive a post-apocalyptic Japan fending off yokai and mechs that have taken over the land.

It's definitely something Game Freak has never attempted before in terms of scale and it'll be interesting to see if they can pull it off. One thing worth noting is that the game does not seem to be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 as even the PS5 was shown during the Xbox Showcase.

Game Freak might have something special

Will it come to the platform at a later date? Only time will tell. In the meantime, Nintendo players will be able to enjoy another Game Freak project later this year, Pokemon Legends Z-A.
