Elden Ring just got one of the most sought-after directors to helm its live-action film adaptation. Bandai Namco announced that filmmaker Alex Garland and studio A24 will be teaming up to bring The Lands Between to the big screen.
Via social media, the Bandai Namco X account (formerly known as Twitter) didn't reveal too many details about the project beyond the involvement of Alex Garland, known for directing films like Ex Machina and Civil War and writing the 28 Days and 28 Years Later films, and A24, one of the most renowned film studios and distributors of the last 15 years.
The implication of the announcement is that the live-action adaptation is still in the very early stages of production as it seems the reveal is simply to generate some buzz.
Videogame adaptations have been seen in a more positive light in recent years. Whereas before they were destined to fail unequivocally due to studios failing to capture the magic of what made the original source special, now they're becoming multimillion-dollar phenomenon that rival even comic-book movies in terms of popularity.
This year alone, A Minecraft Movie was just shy away from racking up $1 billion at the worldwide box office. The quality of the film might be questioned, but the commercial success is beyond undeniable. For studios looking to get their new golden goose, it's become like an arms race to find a major hit in the well of videogame stories.
A24 looks to have scored two big game-to-film projects. On top of Elden Ring, they've secured a co-production deal with Kojima Productions to work on a Death Stranding adaptation.
It'll be interesting to see if Game of Thrones writer George R. R. Martin will be involved with the Elden Ring adaptation. Martin famously provided worldbuilding lore for the world of Hideo Miyazaki's magnum opus, and it would make sense to bring a man of his talents to the adaptation.
