Devil May Cry series creator Adi Shankar has his eyes set on a new franchise: Arc System Work's Blazblue. Or at least, that's what everyone's assuming.
Shankar has been heavily involved in working with Netflix on multiple videogame adaptations. He served as executive producer in the Castlevania series, creator of Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix based on Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, and most recently, creator and developer of the Devil May Cry adaptation.
Shankar shared via social media two images referencing Blazblue. One of the actual Blazblue logo and another one showcasing some of the characters in the franchise, including Ragna, Jin Kisaragi, Noel Vermillion, and more.
Now, it has gone under the radar amid the Blazblue discourse, but Shankar also shared the Killer Instinct logo and an image filled with different versions of Capcom's.
Whatever his next project ends up being, it's likely he's just playing with fans expectations. Shankar's goodwill with the gaming community is all but gone it seems, as his DMC adaptation is being panned for having a surface-level understanding and pandering to the memes rather than what made Dante, Vergil, and the rest of the crew iconic in the first place.
Shankar himself started teasing fans who jokingly stated that the worst you can wish on your enemies was an "Adi Shankar Netflix adaptation of their favorite game".
In any case, adapting a fighting game story could prove to be the creator's biggest challenge to date. Blazblue, in particular, is filled with some of the campiest, convoluted, story beats in video games.
Speaking of fighting games getting shows, Guilty Gear recently got an anime adaptation called Dual Rulers. It's currently an ongoing series with two episodes released as of the time of writing.
Blazblue has been a dormant franchise for almost a decade at this point not counting Crosstag Battle, which was largely a crossover title that featured characters from RWBY, Persona 4 Arena, and Under Night. Speculation of a series could also mean the series could make a comeback.
