It has been delightful to play as the Doom Slayer in the new Doom: The Dark Ages. You get to gun down the demons from Hell, use your melee weapons, a new shiny shield equipped, pilot an Atlan, and ride a dragon. However, the maps in some chapters can be a tad bit confusing at times.
Each chapter in Doom: The Dark Ages has its own map, complete with the collectibles that you can get, such as secrets that may be toys or skins, as well as getting Gold and Rubies for upgrades. However, not all of these secrets are marked on the map, and you'll have to explore each corner to avoid missing them.
The thing is, not being able to complete each chapter 100% can be frustrating. This is especially true since you're able to see the percentage in the chapter select, and you'll also see what you may have missed during the breakdown once you finish the chapter.
Some chapters in Doom: The Dark Ages have straightforward and linear maps, and you'll most likely pass through the secret areas without any hitch. However, some maps are more complex than others. This includes chapters such as Chapter 5, The Holy City of Aratum, where you get to ride a dragon and navigate through the city. There are multiple points that you need to go to, then go down and land in specific areas, such as the Hell Carriers.
Since flying the dragon isn't my favorite thing, despite being cool to ride and shoot from, it was difficult trying to find the secret landing areas. I only managed to find one during my first run. The city is quite big to explore, and the places and enemies are tiny depending on your distance.
Inside these Hell Carriers, there is a map, and you'll need to explore it as much as you can and make sure that you've got everything, as you can't go back since the carriers will be destroyed.
There are maps, such as in Chapter 4, Sentinel Barracks, that have multiple levels. There are the top, middle, and bottom floors that you'll have to navigate through. This can be confusing and a bit disorienting as you try to wrap your head around which direction to take to reach certain areas. It can lead to missing some of the secret places, so be sure to keep a lookout. There are even secret areas in specific chapters that I accidentally stumbled upon since I fell into the water.
Nonetheless, it is challenging and satisfying when you're able to complete the chapter to 100%.
