Umamusume Pretty Derby, the gacha game developed by Cygames, based on the popular Japanese franchise featuring horse girls, has taken over the gaming community by storm. You will train these girls to be in top condition to win various races. If you're new to the game, here are some Umamusume beginner tips and tricks to guide you.
There are many things to cover, as it can be confusing at the beginning. However, if you are familiar with other gacha games, such as Genshin Impact or Zenless Zone Zero, you might have an easier time absorbing the information.
Umamusume Pretty Derby Beginner Guide
Umamusume Pretty Derby's gameplay and user interface can be confusing at first. There are many terms that you need to learn, but playing continuously will help you become familiar with them. Read more to further understand the concepts in the game.
Stamina System
In Umamusume Pretty Derby, there is a concept known as Training Points, or TP. This allows us to start training our selected Umamusume.
As a constant player of many gacha games like Honkai Star Rail, there are energies or stamina that we use up each day. This allows us to get items such as character level up and upgrade materials, relics, and artifacts to boost stats, and more.
If you're a casual player, these Training Points will be enough for your dailies. There are ways to replenish it immediately through Carats or items. An extra run costs around 10 Carats. The game's pretty generous with Carats, especially in the beginning, so I doubt that you'd run out of TP.
Career Mode
The main thing that you will be playing most of the time is Career Mode. When you start a career, you will be training the Umamusume of your choice.
You will then choose Legacy 1 and Legacy 2 (also known as "Parents"). Then you'll need to select 6 Support Cards, five from your own deck and one from your follow list.
Support Cards
These Support Cards have a set of random events that will happen once you start Career Mode. This is why you can't have the Support Cards that have the same character as the one you're training.
While we want to pull for the Umamusume that's featured, be sure to pull on the Support Card banners as well when you have the chance, since they are important. These cards directly impact your Uma's stat gain and provide gold skills that will be advantageous in certain strategies and races.
During training, it's best to choose facilities that have more of your Supports since they provide extra stats based on the effects they have. Also, it's good to focus on raising your friendship with the Supports until it reaches the last bar, which unlocks a Friendship Bonus.
Hints
Besides this, train whenever there's a pink exclamation mark to gain hints. These will unlock skills that you can purchase or will give you more stats. Either way, hints are always good to do in training.
Turns in Career Mode
There are a total of 70 turns in a single run, and you'll see several options on how you can spend these turns.
- Training: You'll primarily spend your turns here. When you choose Training, you have the option to focus on a specific stat. This includes Speed, Stamina, Power, Guts, and Wit. Follow our Stats guide to further familiarize yourself with the concept.
You'll also see that when you hover over a specific stat facility, several stats will be affected. For example, choosing the Speed facility will increase Speed the most, but there will be other stats that will increase alongside it. - Rest: When your Uma has low Energy and will most likely fail in training, choosing Rest restores 30, 50, or 70 Energy. Most of the time, you'll get 50 Energy. However, do your best to avoid using Rest until you absolutely have to. When you encounter options in the events, make sure to choose ones that might restore Energy so you don't have to waste a turn.
- Recreation: This will make you lose one turn, but it will raise Uma's mood. Good and Great Moods provide additional effects that help in training.
- Infirmary: You'll only be able to choose the Infirmary if your Uma is affected by a negative effect. This usually gives some Energy as well.
- Races: Includes the Races that your Uma can participate in. You can participate in the optional races during one of your turns. This consumes some of your energy but rewards you when your Uma performs well.
Career Goal
On the top of the screen, next to the number of turns, you'll see your Uma's career goal. The first goal is "Run in Junior Make Debut." Do your best to complete this, as it allows you to continue Career Mode.
Game Modes
While we'll mostly focus on Career Mode at the beginning of Umamusume Pretty Derby, it's also beneficial to be familiar with the other game modes. These can be viewed by navigating to "Races" from the main interface (before going to Career Mode). You won't get bored with just doing Career Mode, and you'll actually see how your Umas are doing.
- Daily Races: Unlocks at Team Rank E. You can participate in Daily Races three times per day. There are two types: One for Monies, and the other for upgrade materials for your Supports. There are three difficulties, and of course, the higher difficulty provides the most items or materials.
- Team Trials: Team Trials is a team race where you compete against real players (PvP). This is immediately unlocked. It's up to you if you want to participate, but it's not that overwhelming unless you're highly competitive. As someone who isn't a fan of PvP, it was nice to participate in Team Trials in Umamusume!
- Legend Races: This can be found when you click on the Race Events. These are the limited-time events. These are present for around three days, and you can participate three times a day as well.
You can also do rerolls easily if you're unhappy with the Umas and Support Cards that you pulled.
