The Switch 2 has backward compatibility for Switch 1 games, ensuring that fans who invested in that first console can still play those games. Some titles have gotten updates that make them look and play better, like the open-world Zelda titles, while others get better performance without major patches. It still needs some updates, but this will be a great way to play Switch 1 games.

Because this console is so powerful, fans are wondering if the Switch 2’s handheld mode can play Switch 1 games in docked mode. If that wording sounds confusing, gamers are wondering if Switch 1 games look like how they are on the TV while in the handheld form of the Switch 2. That way, they get the better-looking version of their favorite Switch 1 game.

Does the Switch 2’s handheld mode play docked Switch 1 games?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. While the Switch 2 has a 1080p screen, Switch 1 games will still play in 720p or lower in handheld mode, unless they specifically have free resolution updates.

Users on the Switch 2 subreddit have tried playing some Switch 1 games on their new console, with interesting results. Titles like Bayonetta 3 and Hyrule Warriors have improved framerate, but the resolution stays the same. It’s still impressive that these games now play better on the new console.

Do all Switch 1 games play better on Switch 2?

That really depends on the game, so it’s a hard maybe.

We already mentioned how games like Bayonetta 3 run better on the Switch 2. Sadly, titles like Batman: Arkham Knight still look and run pretty badly, proving that this game needs a massive update on the new system. Even if every game doesn’t get a performance boost, this does look like a good way to play most of your Switch 1 games.
