The rebooted Lords of the Fallen came out in 2023 and didn’t leave much of an impact. While it received positive reviews, many felt that the game was just a solid Soulslike RPG, not much more than that. It’s a huge surprise that this game has since made a comeback and is now one of this year’s hottest titles.
It took a while getting to this point, as developer Hexworks made over 50 updates to the game before this massive overhaul. Now being labeled as Lord of the Fallen Update 2.0, it seems that this is almost an entirely different game now. While it still has that Soulslike combat fans either love or hate, some of the new improvements have won over curious gamers.
For those curious about whether to take the plunge and get this game, we've listed the significant changes made in this update. Read on, and see if this hardcore RPG is for you.
Shared Progression Co-Op Saves With Cross-Play
Two players can now keep the progression they’ve made in the campaign, as long as it was all made in the same “New Game.” Once they’ve progressed through the story and have beaten some bosses, they will be able to continue these sessions in the future. Both players will also keep all of their loot, which is a huge boon.
Friend’s Pass
Just like EA’s It Takes Two and Split/Fiction, Lord of the Fallen Version 2.0 now lets you invite friends who don’t own the game so they can do this campaign with you. Like the shared progression, players who go through the Friend’s Pass will keep all of their progress. They will also gain access to the revamped offline tutorial and character maker.
Improved Combat With Smoother Animations
While fans were fine with the combat before, it appears that the devs at Hexworks felt that they could do better. Combat is supposedly more responsive, with smoother animations. The lock-on feature has also been improved; there are more opportunities for Grievous Strikes, and evading is also easier. Weapons have also received an audio improvement, so they also sound better.
Jumping
No joke, Lords of the Fallen Version 2.0 now lets you jump on platforms with a proper jump button. This won’t be taking the crown from Super Mario Odyssey, but it should make traversal more fun now that this is possible. Jumping should also allow for more strategy when fighting some of the more difficult bosses.
Better Character Creator
While character creators in Soulslike games have never really mattered, Version 2.0 adds even more options, letting players create more realistic characters. Usually, this feature wouldn’t matter much because of all the armor you get, but fans will appreciate this. They can make themselves or weird abominations before suiting them up.
New UI
After some complaints from fans, Lords of the Fallen 2.0 decided to overhaul its UI. This gives players a more straightforward way to check their surroundings and navigate the menu. Gamers who found this too convoluted or busy can now play it without much issue.
Improved Tutorial
Because some fans struggled with the game’s first few stages, a better tutorial has been implemented. This will teach gamers some of the mechanics better, preventing any more confusion. An in-game guidebook has also been added to help fans learn about other aspects of the game.
Umbral Lamp Guide
The Umbral Lamp can now guide players on where to go if they get lost in Lords of the Fallen Version 2.0. Fans will enjoy using this, especially when returning to the game after a long break.
So far, that’s every significant improvement added to Lords of the Fallen Version 2.0. With more co-op options and better tutorials, this could elevate it from the other Soulslike games out there. For more on Soulslike titles, read up on what we know about The Duskbloods and Elden Ring on Switch 2.
