Want to know the best weapons to upgrade in Doom: The Dark Ages? Then you've come to the right place. Plenty of guns come with a ton of upgrades to make you even stronger by going to the Sentinel Shrine. However, there are so many to choose from, just from the Gun Upgrades menu alone. You'll be presented with the best gun upgrades in this guide.
There are lot of upgrades to choose from, so you may want to evaluate which one to get. Since you'll earn the upgrade currencies, such as gold and rubies, by going through the chapters, knowing which weapons to upgrade first is key. Read on to find out which ones to get first.
What Are The Best Gun Upgrades In Doom: The Dark Ages?
Some of the best upgrades for guns in Doom: The Dark Ages include enhancements to the Combat Shotgun, Cycler, Chainshot, and Rocket Launcher.
Table of Contents
To upgrade your guns and oth er weapons, you need to go to the Sentinel Shrine. There are 11 guns in total, each of which has its own upgrade tree. Some of them have tiers, which you can purchase for the price of one, but you can switch between the two options.
Upgrades using Gold
Gold is the easiest currency to get in the game, since there's a lot scattered around the map per chapter. The costs per upgrade are still substantial, so be sure to collect as many as possible.
Here are the best gun upgrades you can get in Doom: The Dark Ages using Gold:
- Combat Shotgun
- Incendiary (50 gold) - When you shoot enemies with the combat shotgun, the demons will catch fire and drop armor. This causes damage over time, and having upgrades that give you armor is always good, since you'll constantly lose it while fighting hordes.
- Smelt (125 gold) - As a person who loses armor constantly, this is a lifesaver since it will make demons drop more armor. This allows more sustainability for the Doom Slayer.
- Super Shotgun
- Speed Loader (250 gold) - Expensive upgrade, but perhaps one of my favorites. The Super Shotgun is already strong without any enhancements, but this allows you to fire more shots. Demons will be gone in no time.
- Cycler
- Shock (100 gold) - This is the better option compared to the Accelerator. Shooting demons will cause Shock, which increases the damage they take. Killing any demons will make the Shock spread to other nearby demons.
- Ravager
- Vampirism (250 gold) - Another expensive upgrade, but definitely worth it. When your fire rate is maxed, demons killed by this gun will drop more health. Again, sustainability is excellent, as you'll run out of health packs scattered throughout the area.
- Chainshot
- Eldritch Blessing (150 gold) - In Doom: The Dark Ages, there will be a lot of times when you'll be parrying attacks. With the Eldritch Blessing upgrade, your next shot will instantly be charged after parrying.
- Rocket Launcher
- Cannibalism (250 gold) - Pricey, but I think it's worth it. If you're fond of making demons explode with the Rocket Launcher, then you'd better get this upgrade. It temporarily makes the self-damage done by rockets heal you when you parry an attack. And trust me, you'll be parrying a lot of attacks in the game. Also, you need all the heal you can get since you'll run out of health packs scattered around.
Upgrades using Rubies
You can get rubies in the chapters as well, usually in secret areas. You should keep your eyes peeled so that you won't miss them.
Here are the best upgrades that use rubies:
- Combat Shotgun
- Tune Up (1 ruby) - This is one of my favorites since it allows the Combat Shotgun to fire three shots in a row. Since you'll probably have the Incendiary and Smelt upgrade, you'll be melting all the demons in no time, along with some armor.
- Cycler
- Fulmination (2 rubies) - This upgrade increases the duration of Shock, and enemies that are killed will also spread more lightning to other demons. This means that you'll have increased damage to more enemies.
- Ravager
- Ignition (3 rubies) - I value movement in Doom: The Dark Ages since moving slowly can make me catch all the attacks, so having Ignition over Slow Burn allows the Ravager to reach max fire rate, and you can move faster as well.
- Chainshot
- Gravitational Flux (3 rubies) - Chainshot is just a fantastic weapon to use since it removes demon armor. This upgrade allows the Chainshot to deal more damage to armor when max charged.
Upgrades using Wraithstones
Perhaps the rarest of all the currencies in the game. You'll get your first Wraithstone in Chapter 9.
- Combat Shotgun & Super Shotgun
- Eat This! (1 Wraithstone) - This is a total of 2 Wraithstones for the Combat Shotgun and Super Shotgun. This will increase the number of projectiles fired. The shotguns in Doom: The Dark Ages are just cracked, so I believe that it's best to max them out.
- Chainshot
- Cosmic Breach (1 Wraithstone) - Again, probably the most used and powerful weapon in the game. When you get the Cosmic Breach upgrade, the Chainshot's max charge will then explode on contact. This will deal a devastating blow to your enemies.
- Rocket Launcher
- Bloodlust (1 Wraithstone) - When you've upgraded your priority guns, you can purchase the Rocket Launcher ruby upgrade, then get Bloodlust. This will make Cannibalism last longer, which means more self-healing caused by self-damage with rockets after parrying.
