Nintendo has just announced some major Splatoon news out of nowhere. Not only are we getting a new single-player Splatoon spinoff coming out this week, but there’s also going to be a Splatoon 3 update on Switch 2. This is incredible news for fans of the paint-based shooter, giving them another reason to play the acclaimed third game.

Announced on their YouTube channel, the single-player spinoff is called Splatoon Raiders. Coming out on Switch 2, this new adventure has players going to the Spirhalite Islands with the Deep Cut trio. Details on the spinoff are pretty vague, as Nintendo didn’t give out a release date, but it does look similar to the single-player Splatoon campaigns from 2 and 3.

Luckily, there are plenty of details for the upcoming Splatoon 3 update for Switch 2.

This free update, coming out on June 12, is going to be massive. Releasing on the original Switch and Switch 2, update 10.0.0 brings the Splatlands collection to this game, adding new weapons based on the older titles. In addition to this, Urchin Underpass from the original Splatoon will also be coming as part of the update, giving players some nostalgia for that Wii U classic.

Naturally, because this update is coming to Switch 2, fans will be able to play Splatoon 3 on that system better. Resolution and visuals will get a nice bump. Performance will also be better, though the game already runs fine on original Switch hardware. Cross-play between both systems will also be possible, but the internet might favor Switch 2 players.

All in all, it’s a great time to be a fan of Splatoon. The fact that Nintendo announced this after Summer Game Fest is pretty funny.
