It looks like Roblox’s CEO doesn’t just want the massive platform to be a playground where kids play games for fun. He also wants to see people go out of their way to form meaningful relationships and date each other.
“I think a lot of people who are too afraid to go on a real-life date might find it easier to have a virtual date to start…” That’s what Roblox CEO David Baszucki said in a recent podcast with TechStuff.
Yes, he’s aware that Roblox mostly targets kids, with titles like Squid Game, Dress to Impress, and the new hit Grow a Garden drawing in players thanks to how appealing they are to a younger audience. But his take on online dating using Roblox as a platform is definitely an interesting one.
Roblox has been trying to bridge the age gap and appeal to users aged 17 and above since its 2023 keynote. The company wants to make the platform a safe space where adults can mingle and have fun, too. However, this goal is a double-edged sword. While it’s a noble idea to build a positive dating space for users of the right age, there are growing concerns that it could also attract the wrong crowd. Everyone knows Roblox is home to thousands of kids just trying to make sense of the world and play random games. If Roblox leans too far into dating, it could backfire in a major way.
Thankfully, the platform has already started tightening safety measures, like restricting voice chat until users turn 17. While some kids still manage to fake their age, it’s a decent safeguard to have in place.
Now, David Baszucki is doubling down on his vision of “Roblox as a dating app,” hinting at future features that could help players from around the world form deeper connections. And in a way, it might already be happening. Roblox is full of fan-made servers and lobbies, and it wouldn’t be surprising if there’s already a game out there centered on speed dating.
