Multiplayer in the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is looking less like hope and more like the obvious next step.

CD Projekt Red hasn’t dropped any big news yet, but the trail of updates, interviews, and especially job listings makes it pretty clear where things are headed.

Project Orion (the sequel’s codename) has been picking up speed since its 2022 announcement, with development really kicking off in 2024. The team’s expansion is ongoing as of early 2025, having added 57 developers between October and February, 20 of whom are now working specifically on Orion.

The real clue is in the job descriptions. CDPR posted a listing for a Senior Gameplay Programmer to build systems for both single-player and multiplayer. Combine that with earlier roles like Lead Network Programmer and Combat Designer, which asked for experience with online features or multiplayer mechanics and the writings on the wall.

The original Cyberpunk 2077 was once slated to have multiplayer, but that plan was shelved after the game’s rough 2020 launch. CDPR had to regroup and focus on fixing the base game first, which ended up being the right move in the long run.

With the release of Phantom Liberty and the final updates, Cyberpunk 2077 has finally earned back goodwill. Now, CD Projekt is in a much better position to revisit some of those cut concepts—and it looks like multiplayer is one of them.

The sequel is being made by CDPR’s Boston studio, which was set up to create AAA games from scratch, maybe with multiplayer in mind from the start. Even company leadership has been open about the idea. CDPR co-CEO Michał Nowakowski shared in a Reuters interview from late 2024 that multiplayer is being actively explored for the sequel, but he kept the details vague.

Early 2025 saw CDPR ramping up hires, all pointing to a single goal of an online-ready framework. And before fans of single-player RPGs start to panic, CDPR’s not ditching its roots. Nowakowski has made it clear that single-player games are an essential part of the studio’s ethos.

Most likely, Project Orion will give you the best of both worlds: a gripping solo story and the chance to play with friends. The open world and sandbox design of Cyberpunk naturally lend themselves to co-op or shared online play; a feature fans have been clamoring for since launch.

In short, the signs are all pointing in one direction. Multiplayer may not be stamped on the box just yet—but when the clues are this consistent, it’s practically confirmed.
