Marvel Rivals has been accused of being, for lack of a better term, a lewd game since it was first released. These accusations have only continued with Emma Frost’s thigh-riffic base skin in Season 2, alongside Magneto’s weirdly sexy Binary Sword costume. It seems like NetEase developers are leaning into that reputation with Luna Snow’s recently-revealed “Cool Summer” skin, too.
Unlockable as part of the game's Summer Special Event’s paid tier starting on July 17, Luna’s summer outfit is as revealing as it gets. While the character’s base design is already skimpy, her one-piece bathing suit takes things to the next level. The devs are well aware of this as her, well, “assets” are front and center during her new MVP win screen.
None of this is a bad thing, as I personally love how lewd Marvel Rivals can be. If anything, it’s just amusing to see a character that’s part of a billion-dollar franchise depicted like this. Then again, anyone who has read some of the more recent Marvel Comics knows that these revealing costumes for female characters are far from new.
Rivals is in a pretty hot period right now, as the new season has introduced the X-Men’s Phoenix to the game. It's led to a surge in players and numerous complaints about Wolverine, but more people are playing than normal. This is likely due to the new season hype, and we’re interested in seeing if that momentum continues.
Capitalizing on that momentum with swimsuits is funny, but not at all shocking for Marvel Rivals. It’s not just Luna getting a hot swimsuit, as Psylocke, Loki, Thor, and The Thing are also getting some revealing summer attire. Fans are even calling Ben Grimm “The Thong,” due to how simple and explicit his swimming trunks are.
Now that’s a “hear me out” if we’ve ever seen one.
Marvel Rivals is far from the only game that’s relied on “gooner bait,” as the internet calls it, with Overwatch and Street Fighter 6 also making explicit skins for their characters. The latter will be getting swimsuit skins for its next season, showing that patience is a virtue. Buying these skins isn’t a virtue, but who are we to judge?
