Mario Kart World has been making waves, being the first game most Switch 2 owners are playing. As expected, it’s another good addition to the series and is plenty of fun in multiplayer. What’s surprising is how challenging the game is, as even series veterans are struggling with this speedy new entry.

Despite its adorable visuals, Mario Kart World is challenging for veteran fans and newer players. That doesn’t make it any less fun, but fans must work harder to earn some of those victories.

One fan on the Switch 2 subreddit talked about how difficult it is to get Gold Cups in the game’s Grand Prix. While the player has done repeated playthroughs, they still haven’t gotten those three beautiful stars to get the Gold Cup on certain levels. Fans need to know every shortcut and trick to do well.

Another fan said this entry is much harder than the previous game, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. That game was also pretty challenging in its own right, though balance changes did make 200cc a lot more manageable than in the Wii U version. No matter what they do, the AI is always behind players trying to take their spot.

It’s not just the races fans are struggling with, as some of the missions in Mario Kart World’s Free Roam mode are also pretty difficult. This is more understandable since it's single-player content, so a gradual difficulty shift would always happen. Still, some of those grinding and ring-collecting missions look hard to nail.

Some gamers like being challenged, so having harder AI and tricky missions should win them over. Even if MKW doesn’t have the most content, making races difficult to progress will keep gamers playing until they finally win. That also helps gamers “get good,” so it’s a win-win for everyone involved.

Most casual gamers will play Mario Kart World for multiplayer, hence why this title is a launch game. Everyone wants to play this with their friends or family, as shown by the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales, so most people will immediately think of multiplayer. This game also has some difficult tracks and challenges that should interest those who want a challenge in their racing games.

We still don’t think the game is worth $80, but that’s because no game is worth $80.
