Lords of the Fallen 2023 has been one of the better-received Soulslike games in a while, and plenty of people are sick of that genre. While fans liked the base game enough, there was a massive update that made things better. The combination of a sleek UI, online game sharing, and improved tutorials revitalized this title for many.
In one of the oddest statements we’ve ever read, publisher CI Games confirmed that this RPG has 5.5 million players who are taking part in the action. Unfortunately, the game still hasn’t made a profit for the studio, though it’s close, making us wonder if the AAA bubble has finally broken.
Marek Tyminski, the CEO of CI Games, confirmed on X that Lords of the Fallen is close to the breakeven point. That’s right, despite 5.5 million players enjoying this game, CI Games might not have made a profit, showing how expensive development has gotten. Tyminski did tell a fan that they are “really close” to getting that break-even, but it’s still disappointing to hear.
We’ve seen studios brush off sales in the millions before, showing how messed up game development has been. Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider Survivor games have sold in the millions, but Square Enix considered them disappointing. Remedy Entertainment has also been honest about Alan Wake 2’s slow but steady success rate, as that game is finally making them a profit as well.
Considering the huge number of Soulslike games available, some of them being more acclaimed like Lies of P, it makes sense that Lords of the Fallen isn’t a breakaway success. That being said, knowing this game is in the hands of 5.5 million players and realizing it’s not making money is ridiculous. Some might blame the game-sharing co-op, but we think the expenses of this title may have been poorly handled.
