After nearly three decades, one of PlayStation’s most revered strategy RPGs is getting a proper revival. In a newly released PlayStation Blog post about Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, game director Kazutoyo Maehiro offers new insights into this long-awaited return.
As mentioned during the game’s announcement weeks prior, the remake will offer two versions: a Classic mode that aims to faithfully recreate the original game, and an Enhanced version that introduces voice acting, new dialogue, quality-of-life updates, and an overhauled UI.
Both versions were rebuilt from scratch due to the original’s master data and source code no longer existing, according to Maehiro. As a result, the Enhanced Mode is the ideal option to pick for new and old players, as it brings Tactics into 2025 with a modern touch. However, the Classic mode is still welcome for nostalgic players who want to relive the glory days of the Final Fantasy Tactics era.
More importantly, fans of the series will also be happy to know that the Enhanced Mode will have expanded dialogue and voice acting, particularly with the game’s fan favorite characters.
“Characters like Agrias, Cid, and Mustadio now speak during battles,” says Maehiro. “Some of these exchanges deepen the story and clarify motivations, such as Marquis Elmdore’s decision to walk the path he did.”
Being the most popular characters in the game, longtime fans of the series will have something new to look forward to as this breathes new life into their characters, especially now with voice acting has pushed the team to refine existing dialogue for a more natural and immersive delivery. Maehiro claims that the updated lines clarify the characters’ thoughts, goals and backgrounds.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles launches this September 30 on PS5/PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam, and it’s more than just a remaster. It’s rebuilt from the ground up, developed by a team that includes several key figures from the original 1997 classic. Unfortunately, this won't include the PlayStation Portable content most players seem to love.
