Elden Ring: Nightreign’s reviews are in, and it’s officially the lowest-rated FromSoftware game to date. The news has sparked fresh division within the Soulslike community, particularly among fans who had hoped for a higher Metacritic and OpenCritic score as this was a FromSoftware title.
As of now, Elden Ring: Nightreign holds a 77 on Metacritic from 58 critics. Reviews are all over the place, some calling it “fun with friends,” while others, like IGN’s Mitchell Saltzman, gave it a 7 out of 10, citing the game’s baffling lack of crossplay and quality-of-life communication features.
On OpenCritic, Nightreign fares slightly better with a solid 79, which could still edge up to 80 as more reviews come in.
In the lead-up to its May 30th release, fans were curious about what kind of game Nightreign would be. Once it was revealed to be a mix of survival and roguelike elements, those hoping for another esoteric single-player entry from FromSoftware were understandably disappointed. Still, fans of the game’s unforgiving combat and relentless difficulty feel right at home in Nightreign’s design, especially with its endless loop of monster hunting and grinding for perfection.
Compared to the rest of FromSoftware’s modern catalog, Nightreign currently has the lowest score by a significant margin. The original Elden Ring boasts a staggering 96 on Metacritic. The Dark Souls series ranges from 84 to 91, with Dark Souls II having the highest score and Dark Souls Remastered the lowest.
Other notable titles include Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice with a 90, and Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon with an 86.
While Nightreign’s review scores aren’t catastrophic on their own, they do reflect an industry increasingly focused on high ratings. In many cases, strong review scores correlate with employee bonuses and a morale boost across the studio. Bad ratings, however, often spell doom on a studio.
With Nightreign now holding the title of lowest-rated FromSoftware game, it may cast a shadow over the company’s upcoming experimental multiplayer titles, like The Duskbloods, a Bloodborne spiritual successor slated as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive.
