With Death Stranding 2 inching closer to its release on June 26, more and more news about the game has begun to surface. One of the most intriguing tidbits revealed is the confirmation of a Death Stranding anime, currently in development, according to Hideo Kojima.
The news emerged during Kojima’s recent interview with Vogue Japan, where he was discussing the long-rumored live-action Death Stranding film. Kojima mentioned that he's always dreamed of making a Death Stranding movie that could only be realized through the cinematic medium. Soon after, he casually revealed that an anime project is also underway, though as a separate endeavor.
This aligns with Kojima’s lifelong ambitions, since he’s a passionate auteur when it comes to storytelling in film. With the movie coming along, there’s even potential for it to compete at Cannes, given how A24, the studio behind the film, is known for its bold approach to cinema. It’s possible the movie may not be a direct adaptation at all, especially if it's aiming for critical acclaim.
As for the anime, details are scarce beyond Kojima’s confirmation. Still, it’s easy to imagine it exploring other characters in the Death Stranding universe, perhaps focusing on Fragile, or even Elle Fanning’s mysterious character ‘Tomorrow’ in Death Stranding 2. The anime might serve as a bridge between the stories of the first and second games, or it could just as easily be a faithful 1:1 adaptation. At this point, it's anyone’s guess.
For now, all we can do is speculate. With more Kojima content on the horizon, the anime will have to wait as Death Stranding 2 arrives first, this June 26.
