One of 2015’s most bizarre releases was Evolve, an asymmetrical multiplayer game by Turtle Rock Studios that gained a massive following before its launch. It generated significant hype, even competing head-to-head with titles like Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
It was a promising title that allowed players to take control of either a powerful monster or a team of four hunters trying to survive. The gameplay offered unique and unpredictable experiences in every match.
Unfortunately, Evolve experienced a rapid decline in players over time, despite the release of several DLCs. Many complained about the lack of content and the bare-bones gameplay loop. Turtle Rock Studios made several attempts to keep the game alive, even turning it free, but it was ultimately shut down in September 2018.
Recently, however, an artist posted multiple pieces of concept art from Evolve on the TJ Frame website, offering a glimpse into the game’s early development stages. More importantly, the post revealed 16 images from a planned sequel that was cancelled after just a few months of pre-production.
According to the artist, the sequel would have taken place on a massive asteroid mining station called the Akhenaten. The concept art highlighted how expansive the location would have been, filled with towering structures and massive machines. The new setting and architectural designs could have brought an exciting direction to the sequel, but likely, we’ll never see it fully realized.
The asymmetrical multiplayer format was Evolve’s main selling point. It was one of the first games to popularize the concept that we now associate with titles like Behaviour Interactive’s Dead by Daylight.
Today, the genre holds a small but steady niche in the gaming world, with Dead by Daylight remaining as one of the few successful titles that followed in Evolve’s footsteps.
Evolve was an unfortunate case of a game that couldn’t keep pace with the demands of modern players. It was among the first wave of live-service games, and without sustained support or a strong player base, it ultimately faded away.
Its planned sequel, while promising, shows no hope of returning unless more demand arises.
