When Astro Bot was first released, fans were really happy to see classic and modern PlayStation characters, albeit as cute little robots. From Ghost of Tsushima to Ape Escape, there was plenty of love for these franchises, and it made this charming platformer even better. However, fans everywhere were befuddled that Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 wasn’t in the game, especially since the RPG made PlayStation legendary.
Thankfully, this has now been resolved, as the most recent content update for the platformer added Square Enix’s Cloud Strife, who deserves to be there. Cloud isn’t alone, as the iconic protagonist is joined by other characters from the publisher’s legendary library.
Dual Shockers has confirmed that Serge from Chrono Cross, 2B from Nier: Automata, and Sephiroth from, well, Final Fantasy 7 have joined Astro Bot as VIP Bots. Cameo characters from other games are called VIP Bots, so it’s good to see more of them added, alongside the challenging new levels.
Obviously, the levels themselves are the real story, since five extra ones were added to the cute PS5 platformer. Developer Team Asobi has been generous with these free content drops, and the additional levels are proof of that. Now there are 90 levels in the game, which is an incredible feat for any platformer, let alone one from a slow company like PlayStation.
It’s not yet known if this will be the last major Astro Bot content drop or if more level packs are being planned by Sony and Team Asobi. Sony, for all the company’s faults, has also been good with free updates, as God of War Ragnarok and The Last of Us Part 2 benefited greatly from their extra modes. We hope this platformer gets more content, though fans wouldn’t mind if a sequel eventually comes out in the current generation or PlayStation 6.
