The recent layoffs at Microsoft have many fans wondering about previous Xbox announcements and whether they’re still forthcoming. Many hearts were broken when Perfect Dark was cancelled, as it seemed to be the killer app this console needed. As the dust settles from these layoffs, games like Arkane’s Blade have seemingly survived cancellation.

According to Arkane’s most recent financial statement (via Timur222 on BlueSky), the Marvel property they were tasked with entered full production in late 2024. If true, a prototype for the game was also approved by Arkane, hence the official start of production. Knowing that there was a prototype means it must have entered pre-production around 2021 or 2022.

While the financial report only calls it a “AAA game,” all evidence points to Blade since it was already announced beforehand. Fans of the studio were hoping it would be Dishonored 3, but with no official announcement and the series not being a huge seller, it seems unlikely. This new Marvel game could lead to a new Dishonored, but only time will tell if that happens.

Unfortunately, the last AAA vampire project Arkane, specifically Arkane Austin, worked on was Redfall, and nobody liked that game. Like a lot of modern titles in development, it felt like live-service elements were forced on this title by the publisher, resulting in the final product being a huge mess. Support for the game has already stopped, though fans can still purchase and play Redfall, albeit at their own risk.

Because Marvel’s Blade is a single-player game, this should be up Arkane’s wheelhouse more than Redfall was. The only major difference thus far is that Blade is going to be a third-person game, despite the company normally specializing in first-person stealth titles. It will be interesting to see if Arkane struggles with the third-person perspective, much like how CD Projekt Red initially had problems adapting to FPS games with Cyberpunk 2077.
