Play Fighting Games, Even if You're Bad at Them

Fighting games have never been more back than they are right now.

Street Fighter 6 is still a huge presence in the FGC, and it’s now on the Switch 2. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is coming out next year, looking like the lovechild of Dragon Ball FighterZ and Guilty Gear Strive. Even SNK is doing pretty good with Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.

Despite this, there are still plenty of fans who are hesitant to pick up a fighting game. Maybe it’s the intimidating videos online or the complicated-looking mechanics, but some fans are scared to pick these up. That’s a real shame, because these players are missing out on hours of fun.

As a gamer who is very bad at fighting games, I urge you to pick one up. It doesn’t matter if it’s Street Fighter 6 or Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm; this genre of game is worth trying out, even if you never “get good” at them.

One big reason fans should try this genre out is that these titles are catering to newer gamers every day with each entry. Modern fighters like Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves or Guilty Gear Strive now have simplified inputs that make button-mashing more fun than it should be. Sure, these one-button combos won’t net you a tournament win, but they will get your ears wet for this swimming pool allegory.

Modern fighting games have also heard the criticism when it comes to a lack of content, and are adding more single-player modes to keep offline gamers happy.

Street Fighter 6 has a massive World Tour mode that acts as an open-world brawler and an extended tutorial for genre rookies. Invincible Vs is going to have an original Story that will supposedly surprise comic and TV series fans alike. Even the poorly received Tekken 8 has Story Mode, Arcade Mode, Survival Mode, and so much more for players to sink their teeth into.

The biggest reason fans should try out fighting games is simple: the fighting.

It’s hard to explain, but the fighting in some games can be so satisfying that they become the main reason to keep playing. This writer remembers trying to grind for various armor pieces in Injustice 2 or even playing ranked in Dragon Ball FighterZ. Believe it or not, I was just playing these games for fun because the fighting in them was really addictive.

Playing online is definitely intimidating, but if you’re just out there to have some fun, it becomes a breezy experience. Choosing to play for fun is the best way, though expect ranked players to go at you full force. Beyond that, most players won’t mind getting their butt kicked if they just like inputting Hadoukens or Shoryukens.

For the love of all that is good, please try out more fighting games. There are too many to list, but players will find fun, no matter which title they pick.
