Three Years Later, Red Dead Online Might Finally Be Finding Its Identity

Red Dead Online

Almost out of nowhere, Rockstar Games slipped out an update that brought Red Dead Online back into focus.

It’s been three years since any major additions, and Strange Tales of the West Vol. 1 is the biggest content update since support ended in 2022.

This is not only a patch or extra event since players received new missions-themed content and a glimmer of hope for the frontier.

What’s So Special About the New Missions?

The July 2025 update centers around four new Telegram missions, each filled with eerie supernatural themes.

These go beyond regular shootouts or bounty hunts. Players experience chilling cinematic events that include fighting zombies in disease-ravaged towns or encountering unusual machines and twisted scientific trials.

A writer named Theodore Levin, who is obsessed with the unexplained, sends the missions and sets a horror-western mood. There’s a mission in a cursed version of Armadillo that feels like a nod to the beloved Undead Nightmare expansion from the first Red Dead Redemption.

That similarity hasn’t escaped attention. Some fans jumped to the conclusion that Rockstar could be planning a full horror spin-off again, though nothing official has been announced. The subtitle “Volume 1” has grabbed attention, suggesting this could be only the start.

Does Red Dead 2 Still Compete With New Games?

Despite all the drama surrounding its online mode, it’s easy to forget just how well Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to hold up.

The game remains one of the most visually impressive titles on the market—even seven years after launch. In 2025, very few games can match its atmosphere, world-building, or technical execution.

In fact, only massive releases like Death Stranding 2 have even come close. But that level of polish came at a cost. That level of quality was achieved through a harsh development cycle marked by crunch, long days, and postponed schedules.

That’s part of why so many people are hesitant to believe Rockstar would invest that kind of energy into the game again—especially when the return on investment for Red Dead Online never matched GTA Online’s money-making machine.

Could More Content Be on the Horizon?

The reality is that Red Dead Online has always lived in the shadow of its more profitable sibling.

It didn’t get the same volume of content or developer attention. And while this update feels like a gesture toward fans, it’s unclear if it means a real revival is in the works. Some see it as nothing more than an annual drip-feed to keep servers alive.

Others believe Rockstar is testing the waters for something more—whether that’s a true expansion or a soft lead-in to a potential Red Dead Redemption 3. Still, there’s no denying the power this franchise holds.

Even a small update like this one is enough to reignite passionate conversations across forums, fan pages, and social media.

And while Rockstar hasn’t confirmed any grand plans just yet, the spark is back. What follows depends on whether that spark ignites or dies down once again.
