Capcom is releasing Street Fighter 6 on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, but the physical release plan is causing serious concerns.
The Fighters Edition on Switch 2 uses a Game-Key card instead of a cartridge, so players must download the full 50 GB base game. It also comes with a code for the Year 1–2 DLC fighters, which stops working after June 5, 2027.
From then on, any sealed physical copies will lack some essential content originally included.
This release model isn’t entirely new for Capcom. They have used limited-time DLC codes before in games like Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and Monster Hunter Rise.
Why Is This Expiration Model a Problem?
Using this strategy for Street Fighter 6, a live-service fighting game that relies on competitive consistency and long-term support, has bigger consequences.
The fact that major content expires goes beyond inconvenience. It kills the appeal of physical ownership. Physical editions are bought to maintain access and playability years later, but this SF6 version doesn’t promise that.
When active servers aren’t available, or the code isn’t valid, the DLC is completely locked, making the purchase feel like a letdown or a bait-and-switch.
How Does the Fighters Edition Mislead Buyers?
The Fighters Edition looks like a complete premium package with the base game and two years of extra content, including returning characters like Elena and SNK guests Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui.
But in practice, buyers are getting a semi-digital product where the most important extras are tied to a clock. After 2027, purchasing this edition leaves out characters, balance changes, and possibly more features intended for this game version.
Does the Switch 2 Version Have Any Positives?
The Switch 2 port runs at 60 FPS with cross-play and exclusive motion control modes, but its distribution model hurts its long-term value.
Players serious about competition, collectors, and loyal fans face a shift to digital-first access, even when they buy a boxed version at retail.
Those looking to practice offline, come back to the content, or simply possess a complete game might find the Fighters Edition turning into an expired version of what it was sold as.
Even though Street Fighter 6 holds up well and the Switch 2 launch will hook newcomers, the physical edition has a limited shelf life.
Two years in, the main appeal of that version might no longer be there. After that, it may become more of a regret than a prize for collectors.
