A new Pokemon Champions trailer was released during the most recent Pokemon Presents showcase, revealing plenty of new information. While the graphics could be better, everything about this title, gameplay-wise, has made pro players cry happy tears.
Simply put, this might be the competitive online battler this specific fanbase has been waiting for.
Recruit a New Team or Import Your Old One
Longtime fans of the franchise will be happy to know that Champions will let players choose how they want to form their team. With the Pokemon Home app, they can transfer their teams from older titles and bring them into this game. Those who want a challenge or something new can just choose their favorite critters who are available in Champions.
This is the best feature for pro players in Pokemon Champions. They can import their team and power them up even more, or recruit new versions of these creatures from within the game. It’s the best of both worlds and should make transitioning between newer games easier, as long as the Home app stays intact.
Game Freak has always had to please casual and competitive fans with their mainline titles. That stops now with Champions.
EV Stat Training is a Thing of the Past
Hardcore players often had to excessively check the EV stats of their party to try and make them the best they can be, usually with random results. Pokemon Champions is changing that forever by letting players adjust stats via the in-game currency. This means that players can choose the nature of these attacks and increase the stats of each move as they see fit.
While needing in-game currency is annoying, this feature removes one of the most frustrating aspects of pro training. Because of this feature, we imagine that pro players are going to have a more relaxing time training their partners. It could also be more stressful, as constant ranked battles can take a lot from players, but this won’t be a huge issue for pros.
No In-Game Purchases for Stat Building
Despite the existence of Victory Points, VP for short, it was made clear that Pokemon Champions won’t just let players buy their way to victory. VP can only be earned through ranked battles and “other places”, so players won’t be able to pay for these to get better stats. We imagine that daily and weekly missions are the “other places” you can get VP.
Fans should probably expect microtransactions from this title, since it is free-to-play. The devs will probably make bundles of fan-favorite Pokemon for players to try and get. Pro players might not care for these, though we imagine some casual players won’t be able to help themselves when they put Pikachu Libre and Hawlucha in a $10 bundle.
Battle Revolution Callbacks
Fans were already calling Pokemon Champions an HD version of Battle Revolution, so seeing some callbacks to that Wii game kind of confirms that. Pokemon health bars will have a percentage meter, just like in Battle Revolution. There are also unique knock-back animations, as seen in the Wii title.
We already brought up how players can change their stats on the fly, which was also a Battle Revolution feature. Overall, this is the successor that fans of the Wii title have always wanted. It also looks like the new home for Pro Pokemon players, so Game Freak won’t have to worry about pleasing two different fan bases anymore.
