I’m Weirdly Excited for This Diablo-like Game with Nickelodeon Characters

It’s hard to be excited for games aimed at kids, since they’re usually low effort and don’t offer much value. Knowing that they’re published by GameMill makes them even harder to be hyped for, since they’ve published poor games like Skull Island: Rise of Kong. Despite all that, there’s something about Nicktoons & The Dice of Destiny that looks fun.

The first time I looked at Dice of Destiny, its unique graphical style immediately got my attention. Having characters and enemies look like paper cutouts gives it a charm that reminds us of a good D&D session. While not special, the gameplay itself also looks cool, with each character having fun attacks that pay tribute to the show they’re in.

Nicktoons & The Dice of Destiny also nails its fanservice well. Seeing Sandy Cheeks have a move called “Texas” was funny enough, but seeing her turn into that abomination from the Spongebob episode Survival of the Idiots is simply amazing. Wizard Timmy Turner, having Cosmo and Wanda from The Fairly Odd Parents, is also really fun to see.

Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender is here too! She could finally be in a good game, because the Nickelodeon Avatar games are surprisingly poor quality. That’s more of a sad fact than any kind of game analysis, but noteworthy nonetheless.

While we did rip on GameMill Entertainment for their poor quality releases, their recent Nickelodeon games are a bit better than the company’s usual output. Both of the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl titles have plenty of fans, as they’re essentially Smash Bros. with the Nicktoons. The Nickelodeon Kart Racer titles aren’t as good, but some fans enjoy the third game.

One other noteworthy aspect of Nicktoons & The Dice of Destiny is how they remind me of those Nicktoons Unite games from the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube era. Although these games were standard kids' titles, some of them were solid co-op experiences with fun gameplay.

Luckily, Nicktoons & The Dice of Destiny has four-player co-op, so this should offer similar thrills, if not better ones.

Admittedly, while the trailers look promising, there’s always a good chance that the final product will end up being mediocre. No one will know if the game is good until it comes out, but hopes are high for this one. Even if it disappoints, the unique fantasy setting and Diablo-like gameplay show that GameMill might actually have some ambition with this franchise, and that’s better than nothing.
