5 Reasons to Keep Your Original Nintendo Switch

Switch 2 FOMO is at an all-time high, with fans everywhere trying to get a piece of this console. Gamers are impressed with the increased power this system has, blowing the original Switch out of the water. The fact that scalpers are also getting their hands on this system hasn’t helped at all.

Despite all of that, we think fans who still have the original Switch should stick with their current console, at least for now. It might be outdated by two gaming generations, but there are still a ton of reasons to stay with the original hybrid console.

All the Games

While the Switch 2 can play most of the Switch 1 library, most of those games play on original hardware just fine.

Sure, it can’t run Arkham Knight or WWE 2K18 well, but that hardly matters when Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom still play great on this system.

Until more games come out, we don’t think fans should upgrade right away. The original Switch has a killer library that most consoles would die for, with more games coming out this year and in 2026.

Third-Party Joy-Cons

Because the Switch has been around for almost a decade, it has a ton of third-party Joy-Cons.

A lot of these improve on what Nintendo made, with hall-effect joysticks and bigger buttons. With all these options, we don’t think fans should migrate right away.

Mobapad, NYXI, and CRKD, in particular, have made some great controllers for this system. Consider picking them up if you’re sticking with this console, because we don’t think the Switch 2 is going to get new Joy-Cons anytime soon.

Portability

When fans first saw the Switch, they thought it was a huge console at the time. However, it was quickly dwarfed by the Steam Deck and other handheld PCs that may have forgotten about the whole “handheld” part.

Although the Switch 2 is smaller than these computers, it’s still a chonky boy when compared to the original, hence, fans wanting a Switch 2 Lite.

This is another reason to keep the Switch, since it’s a fairly portable device. It doesn’t matter if players have the OLED, V2, or Lite versions; they can fit in most sling bags or backpacks. At times, they might not even need cases, so players can just chuck them in and have a good time.

Price

While the Switch 2 might be worth its price tag, fans would save a lot of money if they stick with their original models.

After all, they could always wait for a revision that will improve on the current Switch 2. Because the Switch has already gone through its revision phase, the system is basically perfect as it is now.

It might be tempting to see all those Switch games run at 60 FPS, but fans who have a Switch probably don’t care about that. Gameplay is king, so titles like Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Bros. Wonder still run well on this fantastic handheld.

Battery

The biggest factor, in our opinion. Although the Switch 2 has similar battery power to the original Switch, it’s trumped by the Switch V2 and Switch OLED.

Both of these revisions can run for a really long time, making them the perfect choice for handheld consoles. While the Switch 2 can run indie games for a long time, the Switch OLED can run them for even longer.

Fans who really care about the handheld gaming experience will want to stick with their Switch, regardless of which version they have.
