As Someone Who Never Played The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, I’m Excited to Try the Remaster

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is, in fact, real. And Bethesda really did shadow-drop the game for everyone to play right now. It’s every gamer’s dream to get their hands on a title the moment it’s announced, and while speculation was running wild before, at least now everyone can shut up and just play it.

As for me—someone who’s never played Oblivion before—the new content has definitely caught my attention. Is it finally time to hop on the Oblivion train?

Charge!

I didn’t particularly enjoy my time with Skyrim back in the day; it just wasn’t my cup of tea. I can’t say for certain that I’ll enjoy Oblivion either, but I’ve played fantasy titles that capture that same mystique and charm, like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. With Oblivion now running on Unreal Engine 5, it looks better than ever.

That said, part of me is still worried about the game’s performance. As of writing this, I’m still downloading Oblivion—it’s 123.0 GB—so you might want to clear some space or uninstall that one massive game you never touch.

Oddly enough, Oblivion doesn’t seem to be using Starfield’s Creation Engine. I wonder why that decision was made, especially since the Creation Engine offers more flexibility for modding according to the community.

I'd love to try out spellcasting.

Sadly, as someone only now jumping on the Oblivion hype train, I won’t get to experience the original game’s jank and awkward dialogue—unless I decide to play the classic version instead. After over a decade of seeing those memes, it’s a little bittersweet to know the iconic weirdness might be gone.

Right now, my Oblivion download is stuck at 20%. Who knows? Call me a Tourist for all I care, but this might be the first Elder Scrolls game I actually finish before I wait for the game’s sixth elusive entry. I wasn’t even aware Patrick Stewart was in it—and I’m a huge fan.

What now? Well, waiting for the game to finish downloading seems like a good place to start.
