We Need a Good Superman for Injustice 3 After James Gunn’s Hit Movie

DC’s Injustice line of games and comics has had a significant impact on this broader property, clearly influencing the DCEU before it was reimagined. Now that James Gunn is in charge, it looks like we’re going to get a more optimistic take on DC movies, with Superman being an incredible example. Because Injustice is still popular, we think Injustice 3 should spice things up by giving us a good Superman.

“What? Isn’t this sub-series all about what happens when Superman goes bad?” some will ask. They would be correct about that, mostly. But now that being kind is the new punk rock, we think some adjustments can be made, while still releasing a new DC fighting game that keeps some of that edge.

Superman returns? (to Injustice)

Fans who’ve played the first Injustice know that it's a standard Earth-2 DC story where we see good versions of our heroes topple the bad versions. The story mode even ends with our good Superman defeating evil dictator Superman, who might as well be Ultraman with a tragic story.

While Injustice 2 skipped the multiverse trend in favor of a more tightly knit story, we think this trope can come back to give us a good Superman to use for the game.

The best way to do this is by having Injustice 3 continue from Injustice 2’s bad ending, where evil Superman controls his world, and Brainiac’s technology controls Batman's mind. Since Supergirl was set up for a potential protagonist role, she can break out of her prison and even find this good version of Superman, who can help topple this dictator version of himself.

Evil Superman is officially lame

While acceptable in the late 2000s and mid-2010s, the "evil Superman" trope has become dull and lifeless in recent years. Everything from The Boys to Invincible has exhausted that trope. It’s sad how DC itself lent into that trope with these games, but that can finally stop.

The new Superman movie has gone a long way into making this character cool again, but Injustice 3 could go even further. Having the story revolve around a good Superman trying to fight an evil version of himself would be beneficial, especially if the story focuses on him.

As good as the Injustice games’ stories have been, they’re primarily focused on Batman and his worldview, with the occasional spotlight on Supergirl for Injustice 2. Since Batman has had a firm grasp on all DC media, it would be refreshing to have Superman take the lead for once. It would also serve as a fitting way to end this franchise, assuming Warner Bros. wants to do that, though the introduction of a good Superman would probably lengthen the franchise’s life.

New Superman?

For all its faults, the Injustice franchise isn’t afraid to take risks. If bringing in a good Superman to fight the evil one is too clichéd, they can always introduce a legacy character to take that mantle and add integrity to that name again.

We’ve already seen comics where Superman’s son Jon Kent has gone to the Injustice universe, though they weren’t received well. Tie-in comics to the game have confirmed that Conner Kent, also known as Superboy, exists in this universe and has even taken up the Superman mantle, although he ultimately ended up in an alternate universe by the end.

And if all else fails, they can always clone him. It’s a comic book video game. Injustice 3 isn’t above that.

A fresh start for Injustice 3

It’s been a long time since the release of Injustice 2, so there needs to be something that can grab the player’s attention for a third game. Superman is the hottest DC property right now after the movie, so putting him in the lead role for this controversial game series will get fans talking. Good Clark Kent vs Evil Kal-El isn’t exactly groundbreaking stuff, but it might do some good in the continued rebranding of this character.
