Doom: The Dark Ages has been out for a few weeks now, and so far, everything is excellent and fun. There are differences in The Dark Ages' gameplay compared to earlier Doom games, one of which is finally being able to operate an Atlan.
The Atlans were colossal war machines that the Night Sentinels used. These are used when fighting the largest and most dangerous demons from Hell. In previous titles, Atlans were only seen as environmental decoration.
They are mostly inoperable, since it was believed that none of them survived. This contributed to the game's lore, but I'm sure that many players wanted to be able to operate them.
However, we haven't actually gotten to pilot one in the previous Doom titles. They were supposed to be pilotable in previous titles, but that wasn't implemented. Thankfully, players got the chance to take on the battlefield with an Atlan in Doom: The Dark Ages.
In Chapter 3, you will get to pilot the Atlan for the first time. This primarily consists of tutorials on how to operate the machine, and it's pretty easy to get the hang of Atlan's gameplay. It makes you feel really powerful as you punch the large demons, stomping, dashing, using weaponry, and seeing them fall to the ground. You also just plow through all the infrastructure that is around, crushing anything in your way.
While it's one of the main gameplay changes, it's still not the central point since you'll mainly play as the Doom Slayer. It's fun gunning down enemies and using the shield, but I kind of wish there were more instances where we get to pilot the Atlan, though I'll take any opportunity that comes along.
The chapters where I do get to pilot an Atlan feel too fast, or maybe I'm just releasing all my stress onto the demons that I overlook how quickly I'm defeating them and going through the map. Of course, this may depend on the difficulty settings, too. Being in the Atlan makes me feel like Godzilla as I go about finishing the chapter, and everything is so tiny (except for the titans).
The variation in gameplay in Doom: The Dark Ages does have its charm, making combat feel dynamic and not too repetitive. Hopefully, we get to see more of Atlans in the future, should there be any.
