The chances of classic Pokémon games coming out on Switch or Switch 2 keep diminishing, as each Pokémon Presents showcase continues to avoid these topics. We’ve gotten teases before, but they usually lead to new games or mobile titles that most fans won’t care about. At times like these, fans who want the best option possible should just pick up a retro handheld.
Because this article is going to focus on handhelds that can play these classic titles, we won’t get into the stronger devices here. Don’t expect to see the Steam Deck or a Retroid Pocket 5 here. Most of these games are on the Game Boy, so having something that powerful play these games can feel odd (though it’s certainly an option).

With all that in mind, here are the best retro handhelds that can play classic Pokémon games well.
Game Console R36S
One of the most popular retro handhelds to date, Game Console’s R36S is a cheap system that outperforms for its price. It might not have the best d-pad or buttons, but when you’re picking this up for $40 or less, there isn’t a lot to complain about.
Having a 4:3 screen and powered by the RK3326 processor, the R36S is powerful enough to emulate games up to the PS1. That means it can play all your favorite Pokémon games from the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and even the Nintendo DS. For the price, this might as well be a steal.
BatleXP G350
Weird name aside, this new budget handheld has quickly become a favorite in the retro games community. Many suspect that this device was secretly made by Anbernic, as it has a ton of the company’s signature qualities. From the reliable buttons to the firm build, this machine has it all.
Using the same processor as the R36S, this vertical device is also great for all the systems above, including those classic Pokémon titles. It helps that this handheld also has a beige design, similar to the original Game Boy. We’re sure this device has players feeling nostalgic by just looking at it, and is a steal for around $50.
Anbernic RG35XX H
For something more portable and powerful, Anbernic’s RG35XXH could fit the bill for many. While slightly pricier at $60 to $70, this little device can play some games up to PSP, N64, and even Dreamcast. Although the R36S can play some of these heavier titles, the RG35XXH can play even more of them.
Beyond that, its smaller size makes this system perfect for handheld play. That means it can play pretty much every classic Pokémon game you could ask for, maybe even some of those N64 spinoffs. It’s a pretty great option, especially if you want to play more than Pokémon on these retro machines.
Anbernic RG34XX
This device has the same chipset as the RG35XXH, but has one major advantage: it looks just like the original Game Boy Advance. Complete with a 3:2 screen and some extra buttons for SNES and PS1 games, this device is perfect for GBA games. That also means it's perfect for Pokémon titles, making this an ideal candidate for those replaying Emerald or LeafGreen.
Simply put, that GBA aesthetic is enough to get this and make it a permanent Pokémon machine. A lot of the best romhacks are made with FireRed, so this would be an awesome Pokémon romhack machine. Players who have $70 to spare should consider picking this one up for the nostalgia alone.
