It’s no mystery that the shadowdrop of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion took everyone by surprise, and players right now are wondering what other remasters could be cooking up behind the scenes with Bethesda.
As it turns out, there were also files revealing that a remaster of Fallout 3 is in the works, but remastering it won’t be as simple as what Virtuos did with Oblivion.
What Needs to Happen for a Fallout 3 Remaster?
In a recent interview with VideoGamer, Fallout 3 designer Bruce Nesmith discusses what it would take to remaster Fallout 3 for modern audiences. When asked about what changes he would like to see, Nesmith said:
“What did you see in Fallout 4? That will tell you what they felt was necessary to change from Fallout 3… I know in Fallout 4, there was a lot of work done on the gun combat, because Fallout 3 is the first time they ever tried to do a shooter-style game. And, well, I think the work that was done was amazing.”
Despite the praise of fans for the world-building of Fallout, Nesmith himself admits that the gunplay in Fallout 3 is ‘not good.’
Should they attempt a remaster, he says the devs would have to tweak the gunplay so that it's closer to the one from Fallout 4. At the same time, it should be able to hold up well next to the latest Fallout title to come out.
Fallout 3 Remastered Leaks
While Fallout 3 Remastered hasn’t been officially announced, it was one of the titles that had leaked during Xbox’s FTC negotiations, which had also revealed that there was a remaster for Oblivion in the works.
If Bethesda moves forward with the remaster, some expect it to be released in a few years. Still, it’s possible that they could be aiming for a release close to the 2nd Season of Prime’s hit adaptation of Fallout, as the series had also marked a massive interest in the games soon after it released.
Heck, it got me to check out Fallout 76, despite all the poor reviews at launch, that game has been thriving since its 2018 release.
With the second season of Fallout expected to drop sometime next year, there's plenty of time for Bethesda (or another studio like Virtuous) to work on another remaster for what a lot of people consider their entry point into the franchise.
Fallout 3 Remastered hasn’t been officially announced, but you can check out its sister franchise, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, now available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
