Borderlands 4 looks like it will be a quality entry in the series, with more of that cel-shaded shooting action fans love. The only problem is that this game might join Nintendo and Xbox as an $80 “premium” purchase. Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford didn’t help things, saying “real fans” will pay for it.
We’re not saying fans should avoid it, but maybe they can wait before buying Borderlands 4. If you’ve played a Borderlands game before, you’ll know how this game plays. With Mafia: The Old Country and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 holding the line at $50, fans should pick those up first.
For clarity, you’re not a bad person for buying this game, even at $80. It might not be the most original game out there, but fans who enjoy every entry of the Borderlands games will probably like this one. You won’t see a lot of games that can manage looter shooting this well, especially with local and online co-op as options.
However, with games getting more expensive and the economy continuing to crumble, do players really need to get Borderlands 4 right away? Sure, that feeling of FOMO can be hard to resist, but players can always wait for a sale. That’s not a defeatist attitude at all, especially with these price hikes, so always think twice before getting new games.
You don’t have to be a “real” fan and get this cel-shaded looter shooter at launch. Being a casual who cares about their money and time is just as important, if not more. In fact, you don’t even need to get a Switch 2 at launch, because that system’s games are also overpriced.
Games were already expensive at $60, so adding $20 to that almost feels like highway robbery. Pitchford and 2K Games can try to hype up all the content that’s going to be in Borderlands 4, but will it play that differently? There have been three games, a prequel, and a spinoff, all of which are looter shooters, so what makes this one different?
We won’t blame fans for falling for the $80 propaganda that Pitchford and Nintendo are doing. Time is short, and if they have the money for these games, players can spend it how they like. Who knows? Maybe this game will have plenty of content that can only be expected from an $80 “premium” release.
By all accounts, you can buy Borderlands 4 whenever it's convenient. Whether that’s at launch or two years from now, where it will get heavily discounted is up to you.
